The last few months on the farm were dictated by the corona crisis.
Until October there were very few corona infections, but there was a lot of impact from the lockdown: the income of the farm was a lot lower than we had hoped. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The sales price of goats has fallen sharply, while costs have increased. The selling prices of fruit and vegetables were also historically low because other farmers were unable to sell their harvest in recent months. For example, a papaya cost \u20ac 0.10 per kilo instead of \u20ac 0.60. This is of course nice for the buying people in the area, but for the farm it is a pity.
Prices are now picking up again. About 500 kilos of fruit and vegetables were sold this year and we hope that this will increase considerably!
The mango trees that were planted three years ago are beautiful to see – in the pictures you can see the bloom and now the mangoes! Coconut trees are also growing well. Because the rain season is now starting, the planting season of the seasonal vegetables has started. Beautiful fruit and vegetable packages could be made of this in the Netherlands! Beets, okra, eggplant, tomatoes, radishes, green beans, carrots and pepper as vegetable choices. And papaya, guava, mango and bananas for fruit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In preparation for the rain season, a lot of work has been done on silage. The team collected leaves from farmers in nearby villages that are left over from the peanut harvest. Sorghum has also been used for silage. Silage takes place on this scale for the first time. This cannot be compared to what we see in the Netherlands! But for this area where silage was never heard or seen before, it is a first step that we hope will actually provide good food in addition to the grass and other food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been decided to keep the number of goats a bit lower, in order to have more than enough food for the goats on the farm. About 50 goats and gaot kids have been sold so far this year, a good number! We have also started keeping quail and the first eggs are already selling well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farm has also hosted a group of young people from a church from Trincomalee (this city is on the other side of Sri Lanka). During the day these young people did children’s work in the local church nearby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the team on the farm and we in the Netherlands are working on the plans for the coming years, both on the farm and in the vicinity of the farm. De verkoopprijs van geiten is flink gedaald, terwijl de kosten zijn gestegen. Ook waren de verkoopprijzen van groente en fruit historisch laag doordat de afgelopen maanden \u00e1ndere boeren h\u00fan oogst niet konden verkopen. Een papaja kostte bijvoorbeeld\u00a0 \u20ac 0,10 per kilo in plaats van \u20ac 0,60. Dit is voor de kopende mensen in het gebied natuurlijk fijn, maar voor de boerderij is het jammer.
Inmiddels krabbelen de prijzen weer wat op. Zo\u2019n 500 kilo groente en fruit is er verkocht dit jaar en we hopen dat dit nog flink gaat toenemen!
De mangobomen die drie jaar geleden zijn geplant zijn prachtig om te zien - op de foto\u2019s kan je de bloei en nu de mango\u2019s zien! Ook de kokosnootbomen groeien goed.
Omdat het regenseizoen nu begint, is er gestart met het plantseizoen van de seizoensgroenten. Daar zouden in Nederland mooie groente- en fruitpakketten van gemaakt kunnen worden! Bieten, okra, aubergine, tomaten, radijs, sperziebonen, wortels en peper als keuzes voor groenten. En papaja, guave, mango en bananen als fruit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ter voorbereiding op het regenseizoen is er flink gewerkt aan het inkuilen. Het team heeft van de boeren uit de nabijgelegen dorpen het blad verzameld dat overblijft na de pinda oogst. Ook sorghum is gebruikt om in te kuilen. Het inkuilen gebeurt voor het eerst op deze schaal. Dit is niet te vergelijken met wat we in Nederland zien! Maar voor dit gebied waar men nog nooit van inkuilen had gehoord of had gezien is het een eerste stap waarvan we hopen dat het ook daadwerkelijk goed voedsel gaat geven in aanvulling op het gras en ander voedsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Er is voor gekozen om het aantal geiten wat lager te houden, om zo op de boerderij ruim voldoende voedsel voor de geiten te hebben. Zo\u2019n 50 geiten en geitjes zijn dit jaar tot nu toe verkocht, een mooi aantal! Daarnaast zijn we gestart met het houden van kwartels en de eerste eitjes worden al goed verkocht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ook heeft de boerderij een groep jongeren van een kerk uit Trincomalee te gast gehad (deze stad ligt aan de andere kant van Sri Lanka). Overdag hebben deze jongeren kinderwerk gedaan in de lokale kerk vlakbij.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zowel het team op de boerderij alsook wij in Nederland zijn bezig met de plannen voor de komende jaren, zowel op de boerderij als voor in de omgeving van de boerderij.
